Did you know that your attic is where you can find some of the largest opportunities for saving on energy costs in your home?
The attic in your home is so much more than just a storage area. When properly insulated, your attic serves as a protective barrier for your home, stabilizing temperatures and potentially reducing your energy costs.
However, for your attic to keep the temperatures in your home at a comfortable level, it’s important that you invest in the right amount of quality insulation, installed by a professional.
At National Mould Removal, we provide attic insulation services in Kitchener-Waterloo and throughout Southern Ontario. Our roots in the industry as mould inspection and remediation technicians give us a thorough understanding of how attic insulation impacts condensation and mould growth.

If insulation is already present in your attic, our team can install insulation on top of the existing insulation to achieve today’s current standard of R-60, according to the Ontario Building Code.
Not sure where to start? Blown-in, loose fill insulation is the most common and economical application for attic insulation, but to learn more about the types of insulation we offer, reference the “Types of Attic Insulation” section below.

One of the simplest ways to prevent air flow from your living space into the attic is through attic air sealing. Our team will identify and seal any openings to reduce the likelihood of condensation forming in your attic when warm, moist air enters the cool space during the winter months.
When these openings are not sealed, warm air in the attic can often lead to condensation and mould growth. Not only is this hazardous for your health, but it will also damage your roof sheathing.

There are two main functions of attic ventilation in your home: to reduce the temperature in the attic, and to remove excess moisture. Heat rises, and having proper ventilation allows air to flow through your attic to ensure that warm, moist air can escape before condensation forms.
Our team will evaluate the performance of your existing ventilation and determine whether it is adequate or needs improvement. If we identify that the temperature of the attic is higher than that of the exterior, we will install proper ventilation to regulate the temperature and allow humidity to escape.
There are a number of reasons why improving the insulation in your attic is a worthwhile investment for your home or commercial property. Some of these benefits include lowered energy bills, improved air quality, increased safety and a more comfortable home overall.
Reducing your energy bills is one of the main reasons to improve the insulation of your attic. Heating and cooling make up approximately 50-70% of the average energy bill, so when you invest in energy-efficient insulation, you can reduce your heating costs by an estimated 20-50%! While insulation in your attic may seem like an “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” expense, it will improve the comfortability, affordability and efficiency of your entire home. This could be the month that you stop spending unnecessary money to keep your under-insulated home at a consistent, comfortable temperature and finally start saving on heating and cooling costs!
Both poor insulation as well as not having any insulation can affect the air quality in your home. Outdated insulation can result in allergy symptoms and reactions, while homes that are under insulated or poorly sealed can suffer from outdoor pollutants like dust, dirt, mold and/or mildew accumulating. Not only can this cause breathing problems, but can also result in dry skin and irritation, watery, itchy and dry eyes, nose and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing and sneezing. Choosing to insulate your attic properly can improve the overall health of those living in your home or working in your office space
Without proper ventilation in your attic, it’s likely that warm, moist air will result in condensation and mould growth. Not only is mould growth in your attic dangerous for your health, but it can also have severe impacts on the structural integrity of your home over time. When left unchecked, mould growth in the attic can deteriorate attic sheathing and structural roof elements. The gradual damage that poor insulation can cause over time can be extremely costly to rectify.
An under-insulated home is highly susceptible to serious temperature fluctuations. It’s a common misperception that older houses are the only ones faced with insulation problems – if you find that your kitchen floor feels icy-cold in the winter or you are cranking up the air conditioning on mild summer days, poor insulation may be the culprit. Another sure sign of under insulation is major temperature variations between rooms. If the rooms on the upper level of your home are significantly warmer than those on the lower level (think a 10-15 degree variation), it’s very likely that your home requires additional insulation to make every room more comfortable.
The choice of attic insulation you make will depend on a couple factors: where you live and what the climate is like, as well as your budget level. The climate you live in will determine the R-Value you require for insulation, which is a measurement per inch of thickness that tells you how well a type of insulation prevents heat from leaving or entering the space.
At National Mould Removal, we offer three types of attic insulation: fiberglass, cellulose and wood insulation.
Fiberglass is made up of extremely fine glass fibres that create thousands of little air pockets in order to help heat flow. Fiberglass is the most common insulation material because it poses minimal fire risk, it’s affordable, durable, energy efficient and eco-friendly. Fiberglass comes in batts, rolls and loose-fill product, with loose-fill being the most common and economical application.
Cellulose insulation is a fiber insulation material made from recycled paper. Small pieces of recycled material are “fiberized” and densely packed to prevent airflow. Cellulose is treated with non-hazardous chemicals such as ammonium sulfate, borax and boric acid in order to make it flame retardant. This also makes the material resistant to pests and mould. Cellulose is available in two forms: loose-fill or dense packed. Dense packed cellulose is the most common form for attic spaces, and the material is blown-in.
Wood insulation is a safe, natural and highly effective insulation alternative. Wood insulation has a high capacity to absorb and release moisture, it can provide an element of soundproofing and it’s relatively easy to install. Wood insulation is typically installed in batts.
At National Mould Removal, we are your locally trusted experts when it comes to reliable attic insulation and ventilation systems. Our expertise in mould remediation gives us a distinct advantage in the process of ensuring that your attic is properly sealed and ventilation is updated to prevent condensation from forming.
Our team is routinely called to correct poorly installed insulation by contractors who have neglected the air sealing and ventilation process – two steps in the process that we routinely follow to ensure effective insulation.
By working with National Mould Removal, we offer you complete peace of mind by guaranteeing our work. We’re so confident that you’ll be satisfied with the results that we provide a 2-year guarantee against future mould problems.
